Apple ID or password doesn't work for iCloud

I cannot seem to get iCloud to accept my apple ID and password using System Preferences... BUT it works on every other apple account-related thing I log into... i just tried it with my iTunes account, the Apple ID manage center on the Apple website, and i successfully logged into my iCloud account in my browser... but I cannot log in using the system preferences control... therefore I cannot properly sync my iMac! Can anyone help?

Right now iCloud is down, so it will take time.  In the past, there have been users who never got their verification email, so they had to reapply.  But right now, don't try since the system is down.
